  • We were all beginners once, but it's easy for experts to forget how much they didn't know at the outset of their journey. So, even as Tom's Hardware constantly publishes motherboard comparisons, it's easy to overlook the fact that many newcomers lack the requisite knowledge to take advantage of the advice we give. If ever you've found yourself scratching your head after reading about a layout critique, a certain form factor, or a particular chipset, today's update was written just for you.

What goes into choosing a motherboard? Certainly the support for your CPU of choice is key, and Tom's Hardware is there again with everything from low-power mobile processors to 200+ watt overclocked monsters. Still, a motherboard is far more than the component a CPU plugs into!

A somewhat common worst-case scenario for first-time builders is to spend hundreds of dollars in parts, only to find that some won’t fit together. Less common is when parts that fit together don't work together. But the most frequent problem new builders face is an inappropriate component selection that limits the performance of their high-priced build, making it feel like a less-expensive machine. We'll try to help you avoid that awkward moment, when you realize this board won't fit into that enclosure.

Choosing parts that fit and work well together requires consideration of motherboard size, socket type, and chipset features. Getting the best performance involves intricacies like memory configuration and graphics support. Ultimate functionality requires consideration of onboard devices and/or additional card slots.

That seems like a lot of data to take into consideration before even making a purchase, and with over a dozen brands offering hundreds of options, nobody said it would be easy. However, a little general knowledge and a few reviews can take the guesswork out of motherboard selection so you can narrow the market down to a small number of "best matched" models.

Intel has made a recent announcement that has been considered a peculiar intent to improve the reputation of its products and rebut some declarations on the part of Nvidia. Last Wednesday, Intel announced that its technology for processors is only 14 times slower than the technology from the brand of graphics processing units GeForce. The unusual announcement is a move of the Santa Clara maker of processors in order to minimize Nvidia’s allegations. According to Nvidia, the Geforce GPUs are 100 times faster than the regular Intel processors.

A document titled Debunking the 100x GPU vs. CPU Myth has been made public. There, Intel suggests that, under certain circumstances, the applications can run up to 14 times faster on a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280 in comparison with an Intel Core i7-960. Also, Intel stated that, on average, the graphic processor works 2.5 times faster. Naturally, Nvidia reacted quickly and made public its “opinion” about this document. Andy Keane pointed out on a blog Intel relied on a previous generation of the GPU instead of using a Fermi GPU. The Nvidia representative also stated that, apparently, Intel ran codes without any optimization on the GTX 280. Moreover, Keane wrote that it’s unclear how they compared the GPU with the Intel CPU.

Mr. Keane also clarified that all the applications don’t reach the same increase of speed (100 times faster) when they are executed on a GPU, but he mentioned some developers have reached that performance level. Besides, at least seven organizations have claimed to have reached the disputed speed increase (100x), and even one organization announced a speed increase of about 300x.

Hopefully, the buyers of the new Samsung Galaxy S won’t have to worry much about choosing a specific provider at the moment when they buy this new Android smartphone. They’ll be able to get it in a lot of places. AT&T, T-mobile, Sprint, and Verizon will be selling it. What a great decision!

Solar Chargers for Gadgets and Cellphones

Even though we've never reviewed them here (what's wrong with us?) we actually own and use both the Powermonkey eXplorer and the Solio Magnesium Edition Solar Charger and find both of them quite satisfactory.

However either of these solar chargers run upwards of $100 to own. ThinkGeek has the budget conscious in mind with the Pico Freeloader Solar Charger, a compact and lightweight wonder that according to the specs provides power of 35 hours on mobile phone, 14 hours on iPod, or 1.5 hours on GPS on a single ten hour charge. What's particularly nice about the Pico is that you can recharge its internal lithium ion via USB in case of eternal winter (no sun). Oh, did we mention it's only $39?

HP Mini 5101 Ups Ante Notebook

The flourishing mini laptop market is getting even more competitive. Companies are really starting to come to the table with compelling products. HP is one of those companies. Their latest offering, the Mini 5101 is surprising in aesthetic as well as performance.

The HP Mini 5101 stands apart from the crowd in a myriad of ways. First, it keeps the screen small at 10.1 inches. Second, and this is the most striking, the shell is made of brushed aluminum and the chassis is made of magnesium. In terms of processing power, the HP Mini 5101 goes for the stock Atom N280 1.66 GHZ.

You get to choose on some options and also get some unexpected goodies as well. First, you can choose between an WSVGA, or 1024 x 600, and a 16:9 HD screen, or 1366 x 768. If you want leightweight, you can opt for the 4 cell battery. Of course, less uptime is the trade off. Or you can go with the 6 cell. I know which I would choose in an ultra portable! It does come, however, with a standard 7200 rpm drive that has drive protection on it. That means it has a 3 axis accelerometer that locks the drive if it detects a fall. Can you say yes! It also has a spill resistant keyboard and is priced at around $450. The HP Mini 5101 will be a very nice portable mini that will last.

    HP TouchSmart 600 PC

Posted by All Info On 2:54 PM 0 comments Categories:

Touch computing has been on the way for sometime now. I have mentioned it here and there. But HP’s Touchsmart 600-1055 actually gets it right.

I remember the first generation of touchscreen all in ones and they were semi functional. The Touchsmart 600 is HP’s third generation TouchSmart and it is really looking nice. The high end model comes with a 16:9 23 inch screen that is pretty. Of course, the all in one look makes this less of a piece of furniture and more of an accessory. Most people will like that. This Touchsmart comes with a nice, slot-loading blu-Ray player on the right side. The left side sports all the connections.

The HP Touchsmart 600 has the obligatory wireless keyboard, wireless mouse, and monitor with swivel. And the touchsmart suite now includes NetFlix, Hulu,TouchSmart Link, Twitter, Recipe Box , and LiveTV. It is much better than its predecessor. The Recipe Box can read recipes to you aloud. My mother in law would love that one. The TouchSmart Link can grab photos off of your bluetooth enabled phone. And with the addition of HDMI and composite inputs, you can add a slew of gaming and video inputs. Btw, the screen is IR multitouch.

The overall gist is that it’s a good multitouch experience, especially with Windows 7 driving it and the new TouchSmart software. You will want better speakers. You can expect to pay around $1500 for a stacked model.

    O.R.B Bluetooth Earpiece Ring

Posted by All Info On 9:15 AM 0 comments Categories:

I mostly think bluetooth earpieces look stupid. But I have to say that the O.R.B. bluetooth earpiece looks nice. The fact that it converts to a ring with screen is pretty wicked. Oh, and it’s not a concept.

They are saying that the O.R.B. will be available in early 2010. We shall see. But I have to say that I like this design much better than other bluetooth earpieces that I have seen. Yeah, how it keeps from falling off your ear remains to be seen. But I love the design and the fact that it will be using bone conductive audio. You can find something similar in the bone conductive Tooth Tunes toothbrush.

Anyway, the really cool feature about this earpiece is that it converts to a ring when not in use. The deluxe version also features a flexible oled screen that wraps around the ring. That screen will offer up caller ID, texts, and calendar notes. And yes, the ring will come in different sizes. Retail will be $129 for base unit and $175 for deluxe with oled screen.
